In April 2025, Portugal witnessed a deceleration in retail trade growth, registering a 2.1% increase year-on-year, a slowdown from March's 4.0% rise. This decline in momentum extended across various categories. Growth in food sales moderated slightly to 6.0%, down from 6.6%. Meanwhile, non-food sales experienced a 0.5% decrease, contrasting with the previous month's 3.6% increase. Within this non-food segment, clothing and footwear sales saw a significant drop of 11.6%, worsening from a previous 4.9% decline. Online sales also decreased by 8.6%, improving slightly from March's 11.7% decrease. Pharmaceutical product sales growth also slowed, recording a 4.6% rise compared to 5.7% in March. Fuel sales fell by 0.8%, a slight improvement over the 2.9% decline in the previous month. On a monthly comparison, retail sales decreased by 0.2% in April, which followed a 0.6% fall in March.
