In Fiji, consumer prices experienced a modest increase of 0.1% year-on-year in May 2025, reversing the previous month's significant 0.9% decline, which had been the steepest annual decrease in nearly four years. The rise in prices was primarily fueled by an uptick in costs for alcoholic beverages and tobacco, which surged to 4.7% from 3.9% in April. Education costs remained steady with a 0.5% rise, while prices for furnishings, household equipment, and routine maintenance matched the previous month's growth at 0.4%. Additionally, miscellaneous goods and services saw a decreased growth of 8.8% compared to 9.6% in April. Food prices experienced a less pronounced decline of 1.5%, following their sharpest contraction since June 2020 (-4.3%) in April. The decline in clothing and footwear prices (-0.7%) and recreation prices (-0.6%) also moderated compared to the previous month's figures of -1.5% and -0.7%, respectively. Conversely, housing prices (-1.2% compared to -0.8%) and transportation (-3.5% vs -2.7%) fell at a quicker rate. On a month-to-month basis, consumer prices rose by 0.8% in May, recovering from a 0.6% drop in April.
