Dutch Household Spending Growth at 10-Month Low

In April 2025, household consumption in the Netherlands grew by 0.2% compared to the same period the previous year. This is a deceleration from March's revised growth of 1.2% and represents the slowest increase in personal spending since June 2024, when a decline was recorded. The reduction in goods consumption, which decreased by 0.6% following a 1.5% rise, largely contributed to this slowdown. Specifically, there was a decline in the purchase of food, beverages, and tobacco, which dropped by 0.7% compared to a previous increase of 2.3%, alongside a further reduction in other goods, which fell by 4.9% versus a marginal decline of 0.1% earlier. However, there was an increase in the expenditure on durable consumer goods, which rose by 1.9%, up from 1.7%. Meanwhile, spending on services also showed a moderated growth of 0.8%, down from 1.1%, despite observed increases in demand for transport and communication. It is noteworthy that services constitute the majority of total household spending in the Netherlands.
