Senegal Inflation Rate Rebounds in May

In May 2025, consumer prices in Senegal experienced a year-on-year increase of 0.3%, a recovery from the 0.2% decline observed in April. This uptick was primarily driven by rising prices in several categories: alcoholic beverages and tobacco saw an increase to 8.8% from 8.6% in the previous month, clothing and footwear prices rose by 0.3% compared to a 0.1% decline, and health-related costs climbed to 2.3% from 1.6%. Moreover, the reduction in prices for food products and non-alcoholic beverages slowed to -0.3% from -1.2%, and the decline in information and communication prices eased from -8.8% to -6.8%.

On the other hand, inflation showed signs of moderation in areas such as housing and utilities, which decreased to 0.5% from 0.6%, and transport, which dropped to 0.3% from 0.4%. Meanwhile, the leisure, sport, and culture sector experienced a further decrease, with prices falling to -0.4% from -0.2%. Excluding the volatile sectors of energy and fresh products, the core index increased by 2.1% year-on-year, up from April's 1.8% rise. On a month-to-month basis, consumer prices also climbed by 0.3% in May, marking a recovery from the 0.5% decrease recorded in the previous month.
