In April 2025, Bulgaria experienced a significant increase in its trade deficit, which expanded to BGN 1,876.9 million compared to BGN 1,100.0 million in April of the previous year. This expansion was due to a substantial decrease in exports, which outpaced the decline in imports. Specifically, exports dropped by 11.6% year-on-year, totaling BGN 6,583.3 million, influenced by decreased sales to both EU countries (-12.1%) and non-EU countries (-10.7%). Conversely, imports saw a modest reduction of 1.0%, bringing the total to BGN 8,460.2 million. This decline was primarily due to a significant decrease in purchases from EU countries (-6.2%), although imports from countries outside the EU experienced an increase of 6.8%. Over the first four months of the year, from January to April, Bulgaria's trade deficit widened considerably to BGN 6,610.1 million, compared to BGN 3,757.1 million during the same period in the previous year, as exports decreased by 4.8%, while imports rose by 4.8%.
