In May 2025, electronic card transactions in New Zealand experienced a slight decrease of 0.2%, totaling NZD 6.46 billion, after seasonal adjustments. Breaking down the categories, expenditures saw a reduction in fuel by 2.4%, durables by 0.5%, and consumables by 0.1%. Conversely, minor increases were observed in apparel and hospitality, each growing by 0.1%, while spending on motor vehicles, excluding fuel, rose significantly by 2.6%. On a year-over-year comparison, total electronic card spending increased by 0.9% in May, representing the first annual rise in 14 months and reversing the preceding 0.3% downturn observed in April.
