Indonesia Retail Sales Drop for First Time in a Year

In April 2025, Indonesia experienced a slight 0.3% decline in retail sales compared to the previous year, a stark shift from the 5.5% growth recorded in March, which was the highest in seven months. This marks the first annual decrease since April 2024. The downturn was primarily due to more pronounced reductions in sales of information and communication equipment, which fell by 25.1% as opposed to March's 12.9%, and household appliances, which declined by 10.5% compared to a 5.7% drop the previous month. Additionally, clothing sales saw a 5.4% decrease, marking their first decline in three months. Conversely, sales growth for automotive parts and accessories slowed to 8.7% from 9.5%, as did sales for food, beverages, and tobacco, which grew by just 1.2% compared to 6.8%, and for cultural and recreational goods, which slowed to 3.6% from 9.2%. Notably, fuel sales experienced an acceleration, growing by 8.3% compared to 3.3% in March, representing their fastest pace in five months. On a month-to-month basis, retail sales fell by 5.1%, a reversal from the substantial 13.6% increase in March, which was the strongest monthly rise in nearly three years.
