Botswana's annual inflation rate decelerated to 1.9% in May 2025, marking the lowest level since December 2024, down from 2.3% in April. This decline was primarily influenced by a reduction in prices across several categories, including transport, which fell by 2.2% compared to a 1.6% decrease in April, and housing and utilities, which decreased by 0.3% following a 0.9% increase. Additionally, there was a slowdown in price growth for alcoholic beverages and tobacco, which eased to 6.4% from 7.4%; food and non-alcoholic beverages, down to 5.8% from 5.9%; clothing and footwear, which dropped to 3.7% from 4.1%; and health, which ticked down to 2.2% from 2.3%. Conversely, inflation saw a slight uptick in areas like furnishing, household equipment, and maintenance, rising to 2.7% from 2.6%; recreation and culture, which increased to 2.6% from 2.5%; and communication, edging up to 0.2% from 0.1%. Education prices remained stable at 2.6%. On a monthly basis, consumer prices fell by 0.1% in May, marking the first decline in eight months, after a 0.8% increase in the previous period.
