In April 2025, Canada's wholesale sales experienced a significant downturn, declining by 2.3% from the previous month to CAD 84 billion. This decrease exceeded initial predictions of a 0.9% drop and represented the most substantial reduction since June 2023, following a modest 0.2% increase in March. The decline was observed across six of the seven subsectors, with notable drops in motor vehicles and motor vehicle parts and accessories, which plummeted by 6.5% to CAD 14.3 billion, and miscellaneous merchandise, which fell by 3.8% to CAD 10.5 billion. The latter category includes agricultural supplies, minerals, ores, and precious metals. On the other hand, there was an uptick in the food, beverages, and tobacco sector, with sales rising by 1.2% to CAD 15.4 billion. When considering volume, wholesale sales decreased by 2.2% in April. The inventory-to-sales ratio increased to 1.54 compared to 1.51 in March.
