In May 2025, China's surveyed unemployment rate edged down to 5%, slightly below market expectations and the 5.1% recorded in April. This represents the lowest unemployment level since November 2024. For those in the locally registered labor force, the unemployment rate also stood at 5%, mirroring that of the non-locally registered labor force. Specifically, individuals holding non-local agricultural household registration experienced a slightly lower jobless rate of 4.9%. In a survey of 31 major cities, the urban unemployment rate was consistent at 5%, a decrease of 0.1 percentage points from the previous month. On average, employees in enterprises nationwide worked 48.5 hours per week. Over the first five months of the year, the national urban unemployment rate averaged 5.2%.
