In April 2025, Moldova experienced a significant widening of its trade deficit, reaching USD 593.2 million compared to USD 484.1 million in the same period the previous year. This change was primarily due to a decline in exports coupled with a surge in imports. Specifically, exports decreased by 9.3% year-on-year, amounting to USD 265.6 million. This drop was largely influenced by reduced sales to EU countries, which fell by 16.9%, and to CIS nations, which saw a 15.1% decline, although there was a rise in exports to other countries by 11.5%.
Conversely, imports increased by 10.6%, totaling USD 858.8 million. The main drivers of this growth were higher imports from EU countries, which rose by 17.4%, and a 4.2% increase in imports from other nations, despite a 3.2% decrease in goods arriving from CIS countries. Over the first four months of the year, Moldova's trade deficit also grew, reaching USD 2,330.8 million, up from USD 1,717.6 million during the same period last year.
