US Personal Spending Unexpectedly Contracts

In May 2025, personal consumption expenditures (PCE) in the United States experienced a slight decline of 0.1% from the previous month's figure, bringing the total to $21.441 trillion. This decrease followed a 0.2% increase in April and was contrary to predictions of a 0.1% rise. The downturn in spending was primarily due to a significant reduction in goods expenditure, which fell by 0.1% compared to a 0.2% increase the month before. Durable goods saw a steep decline of 1.8%, a sharp contrast from the 0.4% rise in April, while non-durable goods experienced a smaller decrease of 0.2%, following no change previously. Meanwhile, expenditure on services continued to grow but at a more modest rate of 0.1% compared to the prior month's 0.2% increase.
