New Zealand Business Mood Rises from 10-Month Low

In June 2025, New Zealand's ANZ Business Outlook Index saw an increase to 46.3, a notable rise from the ten-month low of 36.6 recorded in May. This uptick in business sentiment was the first since February, partly due to the easing of global tariff issues. Several sub-indices exhibited improvement: forward-looking activity rose to 40.9 from 34.8 in May, export intentions increased to 13.9 from 11.8, pricing intentions edged up to 46.3 from 45.4, investment intentions climbed to 19.9 from 11.6, and profit expectations ascended to 16.7 from 11.1. Additionally, cost expectations accelerated to 79.0 from 72.8, and wage pressures increased from their lowest point since August 2024, moving from 75.3 to 76.1. Meanwhile, inflation expectations remained stable at 2.71%, and credit availability improved, reaching 15.9 from 8.6. The residential construction sector also showed strength, advancing to 44.8 from 36.4, and commercial construction activity rebounded from an eight-month low, improving to 28.1 from 20.6. Despite these positive trends, past own activity declined to 2.3 from 5.1, and past employment figures stayed stagnant at -10, with both metrics still notably lower.
