Swiss Retail Sales Stagnate in May

In May 2025, retail sales in Switzerland remained unchanged compared to the same month the previous year, following a downward revision from the 0.9% growth recorded in April. This stagnant reading was primarily driven by a decrease in sales of food, beverages, and tobacco, which fell by 1% compared to a 0.5% increase in April. Additionally, there was a reduced growth rate in non-food items, which rose by only 1% compared to 1.5% previously. Specifically, the growth in other goods slowed to 0.5% from 2.1%, while sales declined for cultural and recreational goods, dropping to -3.6% from -1.3%, and sales via stalls and markets fell to -0.3% from 1.4%. Conversely, trade at service stations continued to grow, reaching 4.1% from 3.3%. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail activity decreased by 0.6% in May, marking the fourth consecutive month of decline and further extending the downwardly revised fall of 0.2% from the previous month.
