In May 2025, the number of job openings in the United States surged by 374,000, reaching a notable 7.769 million, marking the highest figure since November 2024. This surge significantly surpassed market predictions, which estimated openings at 7.3 million. The accommodation and food services sector experienced the most substantial increase, with 314,000 new openings, followed by the finance and insurance sector, with an additional 91,000 openings. Conversely, the federal government saw a decrease of 39,000 job openings. Regionally, the South experienced the most pronounced growth with an increase of 310,000 openings, while the Midwest added 97,000 and the Northeast 45,000. The West, however, faced a decline, losing 77,000 openings.
