Japan Seeks Trade Deal Amid Trump’s Tariff Ultimatum

Tokyo remains committed to pursuing a mutually beneficial trade agreement with Washington, according to a senior official on Wednesday. This statement comes amid President Trump's heightened threats to impose significant tariffs on Japanese goods. Deputy Chief Cabinet Secretary Kazuhiko Aoki affirmed, "We will actively continue sincere and diligent discussions aimed at achieving an agreement advantageous to both Japan and the U.S." Trump's recent warning suggests that tariffs on Japanese imports might escalate to 30% or even 35%. He expressed dissatisfaction with Japan's limited acquisition of American rice and automobiles. In attempts to align with U.S. trade objectives, Japan has proposed investment opportunities rather than tariff adjustments, though specific commitments have yet to be disclosed. Aoki refrained from commenting on Trump's latest statements. As the July 9 deadline for the introduction of new U.S. "reciprocal" tariffs approaches, which could elevate Japan's tariffs to 24%, tensions are escalating. Trump has indicated there will be no extension to this grace period. Japan's chief negotiator, Ryosei Akazawa, has acknowledged ongoing disparities between the negotiating parties.
