US Job Cuts Fall Sharply in June

In June 2025, employers in the United States reported the lowest number of job cuts for this year, totaling 47,999. This figure represents a significant decrease from May's 93,816 and a slight decline from 48,786 one year prior. According to Andrew Challenger, Senior Vice President at Challenger, Gray & Christmas, "Most companies attributed June's job cuts to prevailing economic conditions. While there was some activity involving DOGE, and over 2,000 jobs have been linked directly to tariffs this year, June remained relatively uneventful."

The consumer products industry experienced the highest number of job reductions, eliminating 9,500 positions. This was followed by the services sector (4,463 job cuts), financial sector (4,164), health care (4,068), retail (4,063), and government (3,801). During the second quarter, the total number of job cuts reached 247,256, marking the highest Q2 figure since 2020. Year-to-date, companies have announced 744,308 job eliminations, the greatest number since 2020. Within the government sector alone, 288,628 jobs have been cut, primarily affecting the Federal Government, with many positions currently in legal uncertainty. Significantly impacted by tariffs, inflation, and economic uncertainty, the retail sector leads in private-sector job cuts this year, with 79,865 jobs eliminated.
