UK New Car Sales Rise 6.7% in June

In June 2025, UK new car sales experienced a significant 6.7% increase compared to the same period last year, totaling 191,316 units. This marks the second consecutive month of growth and represents the strongest performance for June since 2019. The surge in sales was primarily driven by a robust demand for fleet vehicles, which jumped 8.5% to 114,841 units. Meanwhile, private retail sales also saw an uptick, growing by 5.9% to 71,616 units; however, they represented only 37.4% of the market share, indicating that less than four out of ten new cars were purchased by private buyers. Business registrations, conversely, declined markedly by 15.8% to 4,859 units.

Petrol vehicle registrations decreased by 4.2%, while diesel registrations remained relatively stagnant with a slight increase of 0.2%, together constituting 51.6% of the market. In contrast, electrified vehicles continued to gain traction, achieving a total of 92,571 units and capturing a 48.5% share of the market. Within this segment, plug-in models demonstrated the most robust growth: battery electric vehicles (BEVs) soared by 39.1% to 47,354 units, accounting for 24.8% of the market. Plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) also experienced significant growth, rising 28.8% to 21,382 units. On the other hand, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) witnessed a decline, dropping 8.5% to 23,835 units.
