German Industrial Output Unexpectedly Rises

Germany's industrial production experienced a notable increase of 1.2% in May 2025 compared to the previous month, surpassing market forecasts, which had anticipated no change. This growth marks a rebound from April's revised 1.6% decrease. The upturn was largely propelled by impressive advancements in the automotive industry (4.9%), pharmaceuticals (10.0%), and energy production (10.8%). Despite these gains, the construction sector saw a 3.9% decline, while output in energy-intensive industries decreased by 1.8%. Analyzing a more stable three-month average, production from March to May rose by 1.4% over the preceding three-month period. On an annual basis, production increased by 1.0%, reversing April's 2.1% decline and indicating a gradual improvement in Germany's manufacturing industry.
