In May 2025, Germany experienced a 3.8% month-on-month decrease in imports, reaching a five-month low of EUR 111.1 billion. This decline reversed a previously revised upward growth of 2.1% from the prior month and fell short of market forecasts, which anticipated a 0.9% drop. Imports from the European Union declined by 3.6%, with reductions noted in purchases from both the Eurozone (-3.2%) and non-Eurozone areas (-4.2%). Additionally, imports from non-EU countries decreased by 4.1%, mainly attributed to significant declines from the United States (-10.7%), China (-1.0%), and the United Kingdom (-4.0%). However, there was an increase in imports from Russia, which rose by 9.4%. Despite these fluctuations, Germany's total imports for the first five months of the year rose by 4.6% compared to the same period last year, amounting to EUR 566.1 billion.
