Lithuania Trade Deficit Widens in May

Lithuania's trade deficit expanded to EUR 0.584 billion in May 2025, compared to EUR 0.325 billion in the same period the previous year, mainly due to an increase in imports and a decrease in exports. Imports saw a year-on-year rise of 3.5%, amounting to EUR 3.639 billion. This growth was largely driven by notable increases in the importation of machinery and mechanical appliances and parts (24.9%), as well as electrical machinery and equipment and their components (15%). Among Lithuania's key trading partners, imports rose from Poland by 13.7%, Germany by 12.7%, and Latvia by 8.1%. Conversely, exports decreased by 4.3% to EUR 3.054 billion, impacted significantly by a decline in the export of mineral fuels, mineral oils, and related products (26.3%), as well as ground vehicles (20.3%). The primary export destinations were Latvia, accounting for 12.2% of exports, Poland with 10.2%, and Germany at 8.8%. Over the first five months of the year, Lithuania recorded a total trade deficit of EUR 2.765 billion, with exports dipping by 0.7% and imports increasing by 7.2%.
