Senegal Inflation Rate Hits 5-Month High

Senegal experienced a rise in its annual inflation rate, reaching 0.8% in June 2025, up from 0.3% in May, marking the highest point since January. This increase is largely attributed to a rebound in the prices of food products and non-alcoholic beverages, which rose by 0.6% compared to a decline of 0.3% in May, noting their first increase in four months. Housing and utilities prices also showed a sharper increase, climbing to 1.0% from 0.5%, and transport costs surged to 1.6% from a previous 0.3%. Additionally, inflation showed recovery in the leisure, sports, and culture sector, moving to 1.1% from a previous decrease of 0.4%. However, inflation slowed in sectors such as alcoholic beverages and tobacco, which dropped to 7.7% from 8.8%, clothing and footwear, showing a marginal decrease from 0.3% to 0.1%, and health, which edged down from 2.3% to 2.2%. Furthermore, the decline in prices within information and communication was less pronounced, reducing only by 4.5% compared to a sharper 6.8% drop previously. Excluding energy and fresh products, the core index increased by 2.8% year-on-year, following a 2.1% rise in May. On a month-to-month basis, consumer prices rose by 0.9% in June, marking the most significant monthly increase in five months, following a 0.3% lift in May.
