In May 2025, Turkey saw a notable 17.7% increase in retail sales compared to the same month the previous year, an improvement from April’s revised growth rate of 11.7%. This represents the most significant uptick since March 2024. The surge was led by robust sales in food, drinks, and tobacco, which grew by 12.3% compared to 7.5% in April, and in non-food products, which rose by 21.9% from 14.8%. Within the non-food sector, there were substantial sales increases across several categories: pharmaceutical, medical, and orthopedic goods, as well as cosmetic and toilet articles, advanced to 17.2% from 8.2%; audio and video equipment, hardware, paints, glass, electrical household appliances, furniture, etc., grew to 13.2% from 10.6%; mail orders and internet sales increased to 11.7% from 2.6%; and automotive fuel rose to 8.4% from 5%. There was also a remarkable recovery in textiles, clothing, and footwear sales, which bounced back to 11.3% after a decline of 18.2% the previous month. On a seasonally adjusted monthly basis, retail sales experienced a 1.6% rise in May, down from a revised 2.9% increase in April.
