German Current Account Surplus Narrows in May

In May 2025, Germany's current account surplus decreased to €9.6 billion, a drop from €18.9 billion in April. The surplus from goods reduced to €14.5 billion, down from €15.4 billion, and the primary income surplus experienced a significant decrease to €2.7 billion from €14.4 billion. Conversely, there was an improvement in the services sector, with the deficit shrinking to €5.2 billion compared to the previous €6.3 billion, while the secondary income deficit also improved, reducing to €2.4 billion from €4.6 billion. Looking at the first five months of the year, the overall current account surplus has diminished to €102.9 billion, compared to €124 billion during the same timeframe in 2024.
