Japan's industrial output experienced a slight decrease of 0.1% in May 2025 compared to the previous month, contrary to preliminary predictions of a 0.5% rise. This comes after a 1.1% reduction in April, marking the second consecutive month of decline. The decrease was primarily driven by significant drops in transport equipment, excluding motor vehicles (-19.2% compared to -4.1% in April), electronic parts and devices (-14.8% compared to a previous increase of 5.1%), and information and communication electronics equipment (-5.4% compared to a previous rise of 11.4%). On an annual scale, the industrial production shrank by 2.4%, reversing the 0.5% growth seen in April, and signifying the first annual contraction in five months.
