Belgium Trade Surplus Narrows Sharply in May

Belgium's trade surplus saw a significant decrease in May 2025, settling at EUR 1,786 million, down from EUR 2,707.1 million in May of the previous year. This decrease was primarily due to a more pronounced decline in exports compared to imports. Exports experienced a 6.2% drop year-on-year, amounting to EUR 40,259 million. This decline was driven by reduced shipments to both non-EU countries, which fell by 11.5%, and EU countries, which decreased by 3.6%. In contrast, imports decreased by 4.3% to EUR 38,473 million, with purchases from non-EU countries declining by 5.4% and those from EU countries decreasing by 3.6%. For the period from January to May, Belgium saw a surplus of EUR 10,442.4 million, up from EUR 9,150.4 million in the same timeframe last year.
