ASX Falls 0.5% at Close, Logs Weekly Drop

The S&P/ASX 200 index declined by 0.5% to close at 8,667 on Friday, marking its second consecutive session of losses, primarily driven by a downturn in mining and gold sectors. Of the 11 sectors, seven ended in negative territory, with the materials sector experiencing the largest drop of 1.7%. Investors exercised caution ahead of the release of Australia’s upcoming monthly and quarterly inflation figures, which are expected to provide insights into the Reserve Bank of Australia's monetary policy decisions. Additionally, apprehension lingered due to ongoing trade discussions between the United States and key partners, coupled with upcoming negotiations with China set to take place next week in Stockholm. Leading the list of significant decliners were Champion Iron, which saw a decrease of 4.9%, followed by AMP with a 4.8% drop, Bellevue Gold falling 4.5%, Genesis Minerals declining by 4.2%, and Strike Energy reducing by 3.7%. Overall, the benchmark index registered a 1% decline for the week, contrasting with an upturn observed in the preceding week.
