China is set to enforce significant antidumping tariffs on particular Canadian products in response to Ottawa's initiative to increase tariffs on Chinese steel imports. The Ministry of Commerce announced on Tuesday that it will impose a 26.2% duty on halogenated butyl rubber sourced from Arlanxeo Canada and a 40.5% duty on the same products from other Canadian companies. Additionally, similar imports from Japan will face duties ranging between 13.8% and 30.1%. Furthermore, all Canadian rapeseed imports will be subject to a 75.8% tariff due to the alleged damage inflicted on domestic producers. These actions, resulting from an investigation initiated in September 2024, will be effective starting Thursday. Moreover, Beijing has commenced a fresh investigation into Canadian pea starch, prompted by grievances from local industry stakeholders. This development comes in retaliation to Canada's recent tariff hikes on Chinese steel, intended to protect its local industry from the repercussions of U.S. steel tariffs.
