On Wednesday, U.S. President Donald Trump suggested he might announce his choice for the next Federal Reserve chair ahead of schedule, narrowing his list to "three or four" candidates whom he praised as "all good, all great." Trump reiterated his disapproval of the current chair, Jerome Powell, criticizing him for maintaining steady interest rates and previously calling for his resignation. While Trump had contemplated dismissing Powell, he later decided to allow him to serve until the end of his term in May. Despite Trump's assertion of a limited shortlist, Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent indicated in an interview with Bloomberg Television that the administration might actually consider up to 11 candidates for the position.
