Factory Activity in NY Climbs to 9-Month High

The New York Empire State Manufacturing Index surged to 11.9 in August 2025, marking its highest point since November 2024. This is a notable increase from 5.5 in July and far exceeds market projections of zero, indicating a robust enhancement in manufacturing activities. New orders rose significantly, coming in at 15.4 compared to 2.0 in July, while shipments also increased to 12.2 from 11.5. However, delivery times intensified markedly, moving to 17.4 from 8.3, and supply availability slightly worsened, registering at -5.5 compared to -6.4. Meanwhile, inventories saw a decline, dropping to -6.4 after previously expanding to 15.6 last month. Regarding employment, there was a slight uptick, with figures rising to 4.4 from 9.2, although the average workweek remained mostly unchanged. On the pricing front, input costs continued to exert pressure, maintaining a high level at 54.1 compared to 56.0, whereas selling prices experienced a slight decline to 22.9 from 25.7. Despite a tempered optimism, firms remained positive about future prospects, as reflected in the future business conditions index, which stood at 16.0, down from 24.1 in July.
