Canada Housing Starts Rise in July

In July 2025, housing starts in Canada experienced a notable increase of 3.7%, reaching 294,085 units compared to June's 283,523—a figure that surpasses the anticipated 265,000 units. Urban areas, specifically those with populations exceeding 10,000, saw a 4% year-over-year rise, culminating in 23,464 units. Montréal notably led the surge with an impressive 212% increase, primarily fueled by multi-unit developments, while Vancouver also reported a solid 24% growth. Conversely, Toronto witnessed a significant 69% decline, attributed to decreases in both multi-unit and single-detached starts. In rural regions, housing starts were estimated to have an annualized rate of 20,467 units. Overall, the seasonally adjusted annual rate (SAAR) of housing starts throughout Canada rose by 4% in July, achieving 294,085 units compared to 283,523 in June.
