In July 2025, the United States saw a 5.2% increase in housing starts compared to the previous month, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 1.428 million—marking the highest level in five months. This increase defied market predictions, which had anticipated a decrease to 1.29 million, and followed an upwardly revised 5.9% rise in June. The growth was largely driven by housing projects with five or more units, which surged by 11.6% to 470,000, outpacing the 2.8% increase in single-unit starts, which reached 939,000. Regionally, the Midwest experienced a sharp rise of 33.3% to 252,000, and the South also saw significant growth at 19.2% to 833,000. These gains compensated for decreases in the West, which fell by 27.5% to 232,000, and the Northeast, which declined by 11.6% to 111,000.
