In July 2025, New Zealand experienced a 5.4% monthly increase in building consents for new dwellings, reaching a seasonally adjusted total of 3,252 units. This figure comprises 1,512 stand-alone houses, 1,413 townhouses, flats and units, 192 apartments, and 135 units designated for retirement villages. The demand for apartment consents remains unpredictable, often influenced by the scheduling of significant projects. On a regional level, Auckland spearheaded the growth with 14,347 total dwelling consents, in contrast to a decline in building activity in the regions of Canterbury, Waikato, Wellington, and Otago.
