Thai Senate Passes FY 2026 Budget Despite Political Turmoil

Thailand's Senate has sanctioned a budget of THB 3.78 trillion for the upcoming fiscal year starting October 1. This decision, finalized Tuesday, comes as a source of relief for investors concerned about the political uncertainty after the ousting of Paetongtarn Shinawatra from the prime ministerial post. Having previously secured approval from the House of Representatives, the budget received backing from 148 out of 200 senators and is now pending royal assent. As stated by caretaker Deputy Prime Minister and Finance Minister Pichai Chunhavajira, the administration will manage the expenditure with an emphasis on transparency, accountability, and alignment with policy objectives designed to advance the nation's progress amidst rapidly evolving circumstances. Accounting for approximately 20% of Thailand’s US$550 billion economy, the budget includes a forecasted deficit of THB 860 billion, equating to 4.3% of GDP.
