European Natural Gas Eases Toward 15-Month Low

On Wednesday, European natural gas prices dipped to €31.6 per MWh, nearing the 15-month low of €30.3 reached on August 15th, in light of an abundant supply. Recent statistics reveal that EU gas storage levels have surpassed 77% capacity, positioning the region on track to achieve its target of 80% by November, coinciding with higher demand due to the colder season requiring more gas for heating. This ample supply is reflected in surveys showing that imports of liquefied natural gas (LNG) have surged by over 50% since the beginning of the year, bolstering Europe's energy security following the cessation of Russian gas imports. Simultaneously, LNG exports from the United States hit a record high in August as major facilities completed their maintenance. Additionally, reports suggest that EU members are considering implementing measures to enforce a complete ban on Russian natural gas entering the bloc's energy market by 2027, thus closing loopholes used by states previously opposed to such restrictions.
