China Greenlights First Brazilian Sorghum Imports This Year

China has now given the green light for Brazilian sorghum imports, with potential shipments anticipated to begin this year, sooner than initially projected. This development, as reported by Brazil’s Agriculture Ministry and cited by Reuters, offers China an alternative due to the significant reduction in U.S. sorghum exports, which have been affected by mounting trade tensions. The approval was communicated through a letter from China’s General Administration of Customs, following an August visit by Chinese officials to Brazilian sorghum producers. Although Brazilian agricultural groups had previously stated their expectation not to export the current crop, this agreement highlights strengthening connections since President Xi Jinping's state visit to Brasilia in November 2024, marking a significant enhancement in bilateral relations. As one official remarked, "Brazilian sorghum is now eligible for shipment," indicating a strategic shift in China's sourcing arrangements amidst deteriorating U.S.-China trade relations.
