Senegal Inflation Rate at 16-Month High of 2.2%

Senegal experienced a rise in its annual inflation rate to 2.2% in August 2025, up from 1.8% in the preceding month, reaching its peak level since April of the previous year. This escalation was primarily attributed to a more rapid increase in the cost of food products and non-alcoholic beverages, which surged by 3.8% compared to 2.8% in July, marking the swiftest growth in 17 months. There was also an acceleration in price growth for housing and utilities (1.3% compared to 1.1%), transport (1.7% compared to 1.4%), and health services (1.8% compared to 1.7%). The clothing and footwear sector experienced a recovery, with prices ticking up by 0.7% versus a previous decline of 0.1%. When excluding costs associated with energy and fresh products, the core index showed a year-on-year increase of 4.5%, up from a 4.0% rise in July. On a month-to-month comparison, consumer prices moved up by 1.0% in August, following a 1.1% increase in July, which had been the highest since January.
