Estonia Retail Sales Decline in August

In August 2025, Estonia experienced a 1.7% decline in retail sales compared to the same period last year, marking a downturn from the 0.7% increase observed in July. This overall decrease was primarily attributed to weaker sales in both manufactured goods stores and grocery outlets. Among these, mail-order and online sales saw the steepest decline, plummeting by 13.6%, following a 3.4% drop in July. Additionally, turnover reduced in non-specialized stores focused on food, beverages, or tobacco, declining by 3.9% compared to a previous decrease of 4.6%. The volume also contracted in stores dealing with household goods, appliances, hardware, and building materials, which declined by 3.6% following a 7.9% decrease in July, and in pharmacies and cosmetics retail outlets, which fell by 2.2% after posting a 1.9% increase the previous month. Furthermore, sales growth significantly slowed in sectors like computers, peripherals, and software, as well as telecommunications equipment, registering a modest growth of 1.6% compared to 27.8% previously. Conversely, there was a rebound in sales of textiles, clothing, footwear, and leather goods, which saw an increase of 4.1% following a minor decline of 0.1% in July. On a month-to-month comparison, retail sales decreased by 3.3% in August, continuing the downward trend from a 0.5% reduction in the preceding month.
