France Household Spending Edges Higher in August

In August 2025, household consumption in France experienced a modest increase of 0.1% month-on-month, falling short of the anticipated 0.3% rise. This minor uptick follows a 0.3% decline observed in July. The primary driver behind this improvement was increased spending on manufactured goods, which rose by 0.3%, recovering from the previous month’s 0.3% drop. A significant rebound in the purchase of clothing and textiles contributed to this trend, while expenditure on durable and other goods showed no change. Meanwhile, food consumption stabilized after a previous decrease, holding steady with no growth. Although energy consumption only dipped by 0.1% compared to a sharper 1.7% fall earlier, concerns persist regarding spending on gas, electricity, and petroleum products. Annually, household spending saw a decline of 0.8% in August 2025.
