US Job Openings Edge Up

In August 2025, job openings in the United States climbed by 19,000 to reach a total of 7.227 million, following an upward revision of July's figures to 7.208 million, aligning with market forecasts. Growth in job openings was notable in sectors such as health care and social assistance (an increase of 81,000), leisure and hospitality (up by 97,000), and retail trade (up by 55,000). Conversely, the construction sector saw a decrease in openings by 115,000, as did the federal government, with a reduction of 61,000. Region-wise, the South witnessed an increase of 86,000 openings, while the Midwest saw a rise of 44,000. In contrast, the Northeast experienced a downturn with a reduction of 66,000 openings, and the West decreased by 46,000. On another note, both the hiring rate and total separations remained relatively stable at 5.1 million. Within separations, figures for quits stood at 3.1 million, while layoffs and discharges were recorded at 1.7 million, showing little change.
