Italy Retail Sales Dip 0.1% in August

In August 2025, Italy experienced a slight dip in retail trade, with a 0.1% month-on-month decrease, following stagnant performance in July and not meeting market predictions. Food sales dropped for the second month in a row, decreasing by 0.1% compared to a 0.4% decline in July. Meanwhile, non-food sales fell by 0.1% after enjoying four months of growth; this follows a previous increase of 0.3%. Year over year, growth in retail trade decelerated significantly to 0.5% from 1.8%. This slowdown was primarily due to a more modest increase in food sales, which rose by 1.6% compared to 2.9% previously, and a decrease in non-food sales, which fell by 0.2% compared to a 1.0% rise earlier. Notably, the sharpest declines were observed in household appliances, radios, televisions, and tape recorders, as well as pharmaceutical products, each dropping by 3.4%.
