Slovakia Retail Sales Fall 0.7% in August

In August 2025, Slovakia experienced a 0.7% year-on-year decline in retail sales, contrasting with a 0.4% increase observed in July. Notably, sales for various household equipment took a significant hit, decreasing by 5.6% compared to a 2.4% rise in the previous month. The food, beverages, and tobacco segment continued its downward trajectory with a 14.7% drop, worsening from a 7.5% decline in July. Sales of ICT equipment fell by 2.9%, down from a 0.8% decrease, and sales through stalls and markets contracted by 10.8%, following a 6.3% reduction the month prior. Similarly, trade conducted outside stores, stalls, or markets saw a steep decline of 12.5%, compared to a 4.5% fall in July. In contrast, sales growth for other goods in specialized stores slowed, rising by just 4.7% against the previous 8% growth rate. Conversely, there was an upswing in sales for goods in non-specialized stores, which grew by 4.4%, up from 2.5%, alongside a recovery in automotive fuel sales, which rebounded by 0.5% after declining by 3.1% in July. On a month-to-month basis, retail trade remained stable in August, following a 0.5% increase in July.
