Japan Household Spending Grows the Most in 3 Months

In August 2025, household spending in Japan rose by 2.3% year-on-year, surpassing market expectations of a 1.2% increase and accelerating from a 1.4% rise observed in July. This marked the fourth consecutive month of growth in personal expenditure and represented the fastest increase since May. The rise was bolstered by government initiatives designed to alleviate cost pressures and counteract the effects of new U.S. tariffs. Spending continued to climb in areas such as fuel, light and water charges (4.7% compared to 4.8% in July), medical care (1.7% against 11.5%), transportation and communication (13.5% versus 14.8%), and education (16.9% compared to 9.5%). Meanwhile, expenditures rebounded in categories like clothing and footwear (5.4% versus a decline of 0.4%) as well as culture and recreation (12.2% compared to a decrease of 4.1%). Conversely, there was a downturn in spending on food (-1.2% compared to -1.8%), housing (-0.7% as opposed to -5.9%), and furniture and household items (-6.8% compared to an increase of 0.8%). On a monthly basis, spending increased by 0.6%, surpassing predictions of a 0.1% rise, but it represented a significant deceleration from July's 1.7% growth.
