NZX 50 Registers Record-High Close

New Zealand's main index, the S&P/NZX 50, increased by 0.3% to reach a record high of 13,568 on Wednesday. This surge was fueled by an unexpected and substantial interest rate cut from the Reserve Bank, accompanied by indications of potential further cuts. The central bank reduced its official cash rate by 50 basis points to 2.50%, marking the lowest level since July 2022. This decisive action was deemed essential to boost a lagging economy. Since August 2024, there has been a cumulative rate reduction of 300 basis points. With inflation comfortably within the 1%–3% target range, policymakers still have flexibility to continue easing monetary policy. Overall, sectors showed robust performance, with utilities, property, and consumer services leading the way. In the energy sector, Meridian rose by 2.8%, Mercury NZ by 1.5%, Genesis by 1.65%, and Vector by 2.8%, all demonstrating strong performances. The consumer services sector benefited significantly as SkyCity Entertainment jumped by 5.0%. Furthermore, companies within the property sector like Property for Industry (+3.15%), Stride Property (+2.7%), Kiwi Property (+0.9%), and Argosy Property (+0.8%) also posted advances.
