UK Manufacturing Output Drops More than Expected

In September 2025, manufacturing output in the UK registered a significant 1.7% decrease from the previous month. This decline counters the adjusted 0.6% rise seen in August and exceeds market predictions, which anticipated a 0.3% drop. This latest statistic represents the steepest downturn since April 2024, with reductions noted in seven out of thirteen manufacturing sub-sectors. Among the most impacted, the production of motor vehicles, trailers, and semi-trailers plummeted by 28.6%, accounting for a 1.29 percentage point deduction from the overall monthly performance. Other sectors also suffering declines included transport equipment (-13.8%), textiles, apparel, and leather goods (-2.5%), as well as chemicals and chemical products (-1.7%). When viewed on an annual scale, manufacturing production fell by 2.2%, following a revised 0.7% drop in the previous month and falling short of market expectations, which had predicted a 0.8% reduction.
