In October 2025, Canada's housing starts decreased by 17% compared to the previous year, reaching a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 232,765 units, the lowest in seven months. Urban housing starts in areas with populations exceeding 10,000 also fell by 17%, to 255,179 units, while rural areas reported starts at a rate of 22,062 units. In major urban regions, there were significant declines: Toronto experienced a 42% drop and Vancouver saw a reduction of 36%, which counterbalanced the substantial 104% increase observed in Montreal.
