Dutch Gas Prices Set for 40% Annual Drop

Dutch wholesale gas prices have maintained their position above €28 per megawatt-hour, hovering near the highest levels observed in approximately a month. This is attributed to robust wind power generation, which has diminished the demand for gas-powered plants. Nonetheless, the benchmark front-month Dutch contract is poised to finish 2025 at roughly 40% lower. This decline reflects the dampened demand for gas across Europe and a surge in LNG imports, notably from the United States, which is anticipated to set record levels of exports to Europe this year. Concurrently, Europe remains steadfast in its efforts to eliminate Russian gas from its supply chain. On December 17, the European Parliament endorsed the EU’s initiative to cease Russian gas imports by the end of 2027, overcoming the second-to-last legislative hurdle before the ban can be enacted as law.
