Austria Trade Balance Swings to Deficit

In October 2025, Austria experienced a trade deficit of 0.08 billion euros, contrasting sharply with a 0.05 billion euro surplus recorded in the same month the previous year. Import activity increased by 0.8% year-on-year, reaching 17.6 billion euros, propelled by heightened purchases from both European Union countries (up by 0.5%) and non-EU countries (up by 1.5%). In contrast, exports saw a marginal increase of only 0.1%, totaling 17.5 billion euros, primarily due to a 4% decline in sales to non-EU nations, which outweighed a 2.1% rise in exports to EU member states. Over the first ten months of the year, Austria's trade shifted to an overall deficit of 4.5 billion euros, moving away from the 2.89 billion euro surplus achieved during the same period last year. Imports grew by 3.1%, amounting to 163.36 billion euros, as procurement expanded in both EU (up by 1.6%) and non-EU markets (up by 5.9%). Conversely, exports declined by 1.6%, reaching 158.87 billion euros, with decreases in sales to both EU (down by 0.3%) and non-EU countries (down by 4.2%).
