UK Construction Output Unexpectedly Falls

In November 2025, the UK's construction output experienced a 1.1% decline compared to the same month the previous year. This downturn marked a shift from the 0.9% increase observed in October 2025 and fell short of market forecasts, which predicted a 0.1% rise. This latest data represents the first annual decrease since October 2024, attributed to a drop in new construction work (down 2.2% from a 0.8% increase in October) and a slowdown in repair and maintenance activities, which grew by only 0.4% compared to 0.9% the previous month. On a month-to-month basis, construction output decreased by 1.3%, following a 1.2% reduction in October, with declines in both new projects (down 1.9%) and repair and maintenance (down 0.4%). Over the quarter leading up to November, total construction output contracted by 1.1%, marking the steepest decline since March 2023. This was driven by decreases of 1.0% in new work and 1.1% in repair and maintenance activities.
