Estonia Trade Deficit Narrows in December

In December 2025, Estonia experienced a reduction in its trade deficit, which decreased to EUR 270 million from EUR 413 million in the corresponding month of the previous year. This improvement was attributed to exports outpacing imports. Specifically, exports surged by 16% year-on-year, reaching EUR 1,541 million. This growth was driven by increased shipments to both European Union nations, which rose by 17%, and non-EU countries, which saw a 14% rise. Significant gains were observed in sectors such as electrical equipment, agricultural products and food preparations, as well as wood and wood-related articles. On the import side, there was a 4% increase, totaling EUR 1,811 million. This growth in imports was fueled by a substantial 31% rise in purchases from non-EU countries, although there was a slight decline of 1% in imports from EU countries. The primary contributors to the rise in imports included electrical equipment, agricultural products and food preparations, and transport equipment. Over the entirety of 2025, Estonia recorded a trade deficit of EUR 3,828 million, which was an expansion from the EUR 3,384 million shortfall noted in 2024.
